Medicare Plan G-HD...  An Overlooked but Reliable option!

A High-Deductible Medicare Plan G (Plan G HD) offers the same comprehensive benefits as standard Plan G but requires a much lower monthly premium. In exchange, you pay out-of-pocket for your Medicare-approved medical expenses until you reach an annual deductible, which is $2,950. After that, the plan covers 100% of covered costs.

How Coverage Works

  1. Low Premiums: You pay a smaller monthly fee, making it ideal if you want to save money upfront and do not visit the doctor often.
  2. Paying Your Way: When you receive care, Original Medicare pays its share first. The remaining coinsurance, copayments, and deductibles are billed to you and count toward your plan's high deductible.
    • Example: If you have a Medicare Part B doctor visit, Medicare pays 80% and you are responsible for the remaining 20%. That 20% out-of-pocket cost is applied toward your annual $2,950 deductible.
    • Example: If you are admitted to the hospital, your Medicare Part A deductible is applied to your $2,950 calendar-year deductible.
  3. 100% Coverage: Once your out-of-pocket spending reaches the deductible limit ($2,950), your Plan G HD covers 100% of all approved Medicare Part A and Part B out-of-pocket costs for the remainder of the calendar year.

Key Details & Rules

  • Deductible: The deductible is $2,950.
  • What Counts: Medical expenses that would ordinarily be paid by the Medigap policy (including the Part B deductible) go toward meeting this deductible.
  • What Doesn't Count: Your monthly premium does not count toward the deductible. Foreign travel emergency expenses also have a separate deductible and are not applied to the $2,950 limit.
  • Network Freedom: Like standard Medigap plans, you can use any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, without needing prior authorizations.
