Medicare Part D (RX) Enrollment Constraints and Restrictions

Generally, you cannot change your Medicare Part D plan simply because you changed your mind within 30 days of enrollment. Changes are limited to specific times, such as the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct. 15–Dec. 7), or via a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) due to specific life events like moving, losing coverage, or qualifying for Extra Help. Key Constraints and Opportunities
  • No Free-Look Period: Medicare does not provide a 30-day "trial" period to change your mind after choosing a Part D plan.
  • Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): From October 15 to December 7, you can switch, join, or drop any Part D plan. The new plan begins January 1.
  • Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs): If you experience a qualifying event, you may change plans. Examples include:
    • Moving: Moving to a new address outside your plan’s service area (usually 2 months to switch).
    • Extra Help: Qualifying for the Part D Low-Income Subsidy (Extra Help) allows changes once per quarter during the first nine months of the year.
    • Loss of Coverage: Losing employer or union drug coverage.
    • Institution: Entering or leaving a nursing home.
  • 5-Star Special Enrollment Period: You can switch to a 5-star plan if one is available in your area (once per year, between Dec. 8 and Nov. 30). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]
